Avoid Getting Your Device Stolen!

Imagine going to use your phone or your iPad or your tablet… only to discover you don’t have it. Suddenly, your mind races. You’re thinking of all the places you might have put that device down and forgotten about it, leaving it behind you while you went about your day. But then you realize: There was a moment that the device was unattended. You haven’t lost it. Some thief has taken it.

The news is full of stories of people who stole a phone or a tablet and then were discovered because the device’s owner had one of those apps that let them activate the camera and take pictures of the thief. There are apps that let you find your lost device that can also be used to track down its GPS location in the event of a theft. There are other security apps that let you secure your data when your device is taken so whomever has it can’t access what’s on it. But you can reduce the chances of having your device stolen by following a few simple tips.

First, always make sure your device is locked out when you’re not using it. Thieves are much less likely to target a device that is obviously locked out than one that isn’t. That’s not a guarantee, of course, but it does help, just like locking your car and putting “the club” on the steering wheel helps prompt thieves to move on to a less secure target. The most important thing about your device, though, is that you must never leave it out of your sight. For example, ladies should not leave their purse and phone or tablet in a shopping cart while they are distracted getting something from a shelf or out of a cooler at the grocery store, because an enterprising thief could snap up the device while passing by. Never leave your car running with the keys in it because you are just “running inside the store for a moment,” especially if your device is visible in the car, because some thief could use the opportunity to steal your gear (or your vehicle).

Keeping tabs on your device is all about staying alert. Always know what’s going on around you, and pay attention to the people who are nearby. Basically, the security of your device, and of the data on that device, is all up to you. Never forget that you are the one who bears responsibility for that.
